New video: Billy Strings' teacher's killer scale exercise
The video on Robb Cappelletto's six-position scale exercise is out.
In August I sat in on a fretboard geometry master class with Robb, who teaches Billy Strings and Andy Wood, and this is the exercise he gave us. The first half of the video teaches it the way Robb laid it out: six positions that cover the whole neck, all built from roots on the low E and A strings. The second half looks at what the exercise leaves out, and rebuilds the same shapes from a few building blocks that work from any root, on any string, and in the modes.
The exercise itself has its own post, from when the written lesson went up. If you're curious how the video was put together, there's also a look inside the edit.
Where to go from here
- The lesson page has the video without ads for anyone with a free account, with captions in English, French, Spanish, Korean, and German. The written lesson, with right- and left-handed PDFs, is included with Silver membership and up.
- The building blocks come from my first twelve YouTube videos, which work as a free mini-course in the Guitar Scales Made Easy playlist. The PDF bundle has all twelve ad-free, with a printable cheat sheet for each.
- Complete Scale Fluency teaches the whole system step by step, from a single string to the whole neck.
- The practice routine at the end of the written lesson is a row you can add to the Practice Planner (Silver and up). It hands you the next key each session and steps through every shape on the fretboard.
