Fret Science

Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 11, 2026

Fret Science ("Fret Science", "we", "us", or "our") is operated by Keith Martin. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect when you use fretscience.com and our online courses (the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the Service, you agree to this policy.

Fret Science is currently offered as a beta to active Patreon supporters and others by invitation.

Information we collect

Account information. When you create an account or sign in, our authentication provider (Clerk) collects and stores your email address, your name if you provide one, and an account identifier. If you sign in through a third party such as Patreon or Google, we receive your basic profile information and email from that provider.

Membership and purchase information. If you connect or sign in with Patreon, we receive your membership status and tier so we can grant the right level of access; we do not receive your payment-card details. If you purchase access through our store (Shopify), we receive your email and order details so we can grant access; payment is processed by Shopify and we do not receive your full card number.

Learning activity. We record your progress through lessons — which lessons you start and complete, your playback position, and lessons you bookmark — so you can resume where you left off and see your progress.

Feedback. If you send feedback through the Service, we store your message together with the page you sent it from and your account, so we can understand and respond to it.

Technical and usage data. Like most websites, we and our providers automatically collect technical information such as your IP address, browser type and version (user agent), device information, and timestamps, for security, troubleshooting, and to operate the Service.

Cookies. We use cookies that are necessary for the Service to function — primarily to keep you signed in (set by Clerk). We do not use cookies for third-party advertising.

Embedded videos. Some blog posts embed YouTube videos using YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), which does not set cookies until you choose to play a video. If you play an embedded video, YouTube (Google) may receive your IP address and set cookies on its own domain, as described in Google's privacy policy.

How we use your information

  • To provide, maintain, and secure the Service and your account;
  • To authenticate you and grant access based on your Patreon membership, purchases, or invitation;
  • To save and display your learning progress and bookmarks;
  • To respond to your feedback and provide support;
  • To send you service-related (transactional) messages, such as confirmations and feedback follow-ups (delivered via Resend);
  • To send you updates and marketing about Fret Science where you have not opted out (sent through our store's email tools); and
  • To understand and improve how the Service is used, and to comply with our legal obligations.

How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who process it on our behalf to operate the Service, including:

  • Clerk — account sign-in and authentication;
  • Supabase — our database (account records, access grants, progress, and feedback);
  • Vercel — application hosting;
  • Bunny Stream — video hosting and delivery;
  • YouTube (Google) — playback of videos embedded in our blog posts;
  • Patreon — membership verification, when you connect Patreon;
  • Shopify — purchases and store email; and
  • Resend — transactional email delivery.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Fret Science and its users. If the Service is ever transferred to another owner, account information may transfer with it.

Email communications

Transactional emails (for example, account or feedback messages) are part of the Service. Marketing emails include an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time without affecting your access.

Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data (see "Your rights"). We may retain limited information where required for legal, security, or record-keeping purposes.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these, contact us through our contact form and we will respond as required by applicable law. You can also manage or cancel a Patreon membership directly in Patreon.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal bases for processing are: performing our contract with you (providing the Service), your consent (for example, optional marketing), and our legitimate interests (operating, improving, and securing the Service). If you are a California resident, we do not sell your personal information and you may exercise the rights described above.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, and we rely on established providers (listed above) that maintain their own security practices. No online service can be guaranteed perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.

Children

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

International users

Fret Science is operated from, and your information is processed and stored in, the United States, and by providers that may process data in the United States and elsewhere. By using the Service, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in countries with data-protection laws different from your own.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above, and significant changes may be communicated through the Service.
