Complete Scale Fluency is finished

Complete Scale Fluency

The last lesson of Complete Scale Fluency, What You've Built, and Where to Go Next, went live on the morning of Saturday, October 10, so the whole course is now on the site. If you bought it while I was still making it, thank you for your patience. Every lesson you were waiting for is there.

What's in the course

The course runs seven modules. It starts with the major scale on a single string and ends with the whole neck:

  1. Introduction: the four levels of understanding, the four lenses, and how to practice.
  2. The Major Scale on One String: note and interval names, and the course's first visual model, the three-note fragment.
  3. Pentatonics: Movement, Shape, and Freedom: the rectangle and the stack, and the scales that grow out of the same two shapes.
  4. A Brief Interlude: landmark navigation, intervals on the fretboard, and arpeggios across the neck.
  5. The Major Scale Across the Fretboard: all seven modes, with no new shapes to memorize.
  6. Turning Scales into Music: melodic sequences, rhythm and displacement, contour, and repetition and variation.
  7. Harmony, Minor Scales, and Extensions: the chords inside the scale, harmonic and melodic minor, the symmetric scales, and gear shifts between scale families.

The Course Guide

The Course Guide is finished too. It runs 120 pages with 330 fretboard diagrams and has a section for every lesson. You can read it on the site, or download it as a PDF or an EPUB, in right- and left-handed editions. Many of its exercises come with a practice card: press play, and a drone and a click start at the recommended settings for that exercise.

The course also comes with the practice tools it's built around: every scale in the Scale Visualizer, the Melodic Sequence Explorer, and the Metronome & Drone Generator.

How to get it

  • Try it first. The first two modules are free to watch, and you don't need an account. Start with the first lesson.
  • Buy it to keep. The course page has a short video tour of the course.
  • Gold and Platinum patrons already have it. Sign in with your Patreon account and it's on the course page.
  • Patrons who'd rather keep it for good: everything you've paid on Patreon counts toward buying a course outright. Your balance is on your credits page.

What's next

With the course done, I'm turning to what people asked for in last month's survey: more YouTube videos, a new series of instructional jam tracks for the site's Jam Track Player, and more practice tools. I'll write about each of them here as they take shape.
